What is Prose?

Hey, recently I have been introduced to prose in university. But I have been really confused. I have been given the task to write a short story in the form of prose.

What exactly does it mean?

Would novels (for example, The Lords of the Ring) be considered as prose?

Thanks in advance.

Anything that is not poetry is prose. So anything you write as an essay is prose.

And yes, novels are 99.99 per cent of the time prose works.

In a world we call our home there's lots of room to roam Plenty of time to turn mistakes into rhyme There's a place for those who love their poetry It's just across from the sign that says, "Pros Only"
