I am an American and I think our culture is changing -- going backward, in fact. This is partly the fault of the neo-conservative movement in our country.
There are two major modes of thought here in the U.S. One is progressive and the other is conservative. Now there is a third -- neo-conservatism. Neo-conservatism, which started in the 1950s and was based on the beliefs by a philosopher named Leo Strauss, is an extreme form of conservatism that has infiltrated our republican party and is turning it on its head. Neoconservatives feel that “liberalism” is a threat to our society and they intend to eradicate it. They think they know better than everybody else where this country should go. What does this mean for us? It means a loss of democracy.
I’m not trying to be extreme here – most American’s here in the US (democrat, republican, or other) can sense something strange going on. We can all see that far-right Christian fundamentalism is finding its place in government. Why? Well, the Neo-conservatives feel that there is evil in the world that must be eradicated by the good. Who else shares this idea? Christians. In the 1970s, the neoconservatives, in an attempt to unite the people by giving them a shared purpose, needed a large voting base, so they made allies with some fundamentalist Christian preachers who were able to get their congregations to vote. This is how the neoconservatives (people like Rumsfield, Wolfowitz, and Cheney) were able to get a foothold in government under the Regan administration. And they've stayed in power (these are the same people who have been advising GW Bush today).
How does this affect our society? New shows have popped up on TV. For example, there’s one called “Justice Sundays.” This televised program has Government officials standing on a religious pulpit with fundamentalist Christian preachers saying that we have to put prayer back in school and that we need a supreme court judge with Christian values to interpret the laws. This may lead to the re-evaluation of the infamous Roe v Wade decision which made it possible to have an abortion IF YOU WANT (this decision allows for the CHOICE of abortion which is performed by a doctor -- safely). If this decision is overturned it will outlaw abortion (not giving you the choice).
Don’t get me wrong; I have nothing against Christian values; but I do have a problem with people telling what to believe and how to behave.
I don’t ask that my beliefs be made into law. Democracy is all about setting the ground rules and allowing the people to do and believe what they want.
We all need to be aware of this neo-conservative movement and how it will endanger our culture and probably the culture of other countries (meaning that rather than compromise with other cultures, it will try to destroy them).
Just look at the news today: Pat Robinson, a Christian preacher, just called for the assassination of Hugo Chavez (the Venezuelan President) because of his “liberal” values. This is not democratic behavior, and certainly not behavior synonymous with a religious person.

i think theres a problem with people seeing the worst in people, partly
cuz thats all thats shown. yes there are some problems in the US, but
any person who thinks their country dosent have any
problems is fooling themselves. the US has many many great
people, opportunities and freedoms! and again that goes for other
countries as well! i think we need to look beyond the shallow ignorant
people that are shown on tv and such ( its my experience that these are
pretty much the only type of people they show), i belive that these are
the minority of people and the reason we think there are many more of
them is again, thats all we see...

My thoughts on the USA. The big boss. US government loves to think it's world's boss and nobody likes bosses, so that's why people hate the USA, not all the people, but a good part of it, yes.
I think the USA is a big country that's getting lost into its own greatness. It's the richest country in the world, it has the biggest and well-trainned army in the world, it has the best technology in the world, but in the other hand, it has people starving in Lousianna, it has lots of social problems, it has lots of prejudice regrading other people and culture.
I think it's a great country in need of good politics to make it going on, because if the american politics keep on as they are, I'm afraid the USA will face some bad moments in a near future.

i'm probably one of those few people who doesn't hate america... as much as possible, i try my best not to hate at all... but anyway, here are my thoughts... i still believe that america is the land of milk and honey... most of my relatives and in fact, three of my siblings have migrated to the mainland and are enjoying the fruits of their labor... it is a land of opportunity for people who have ambitions and are willing to sacrifice for it...
america might have acted like the world's police but i'd rather see america be it than other countries in the world... after all, their aim is to protect freedom and the american way of life, which a lot of us unconsciously aspire for whether we admit it or not...
of course america is not a perfect country... it has internal problems too... but the good thing is that its citizens recognize that and they are willing to work on it...

When I started writing my answer to your question, I tried to explain
why I felt in this particular way. However it is really difficult to me
to do it. So I'll just tell you what I currently feel, what's in my
heart regarding the United States: ant that is a deep sadness, not hate.
I'm aware there must be good and intelligent people in your country,
but the way it is behaving towards other countries makes inmensely sad.
So much war, so much blood. So many good people being so manipulated by their government.
Believe me I tried to express my point of view about your country, but
I just couldn't do it. I would like to see a United States committed to
peace, however I always see reasons for it to became involved in
horrible acts. It has a shocking similarity to the old Roman Empire. So
glorious, and so bloody at the same time.

There two sides of the United States for me... the bad one and the good one...
Many people associate with the U.S. rish people. luxus, expenise cars, hollywood, beauties... but it is only the one side... what about poor peope there? about childer who have no education, who grows up in poverty and crime? In this country nobody cares about you. U can die on the steet if u have no money.
About wat in Iraq. Well, i have no good feeling about it. Many people stil die every day there. And how does this war helped people? Is terrorism threat smaller now? The answer is-no.
It would be better if American gowernment sent the army troops to afrika, where people live in fear they could die tomorrow.
So all in all America has two faces.. and we should not think about only one..

Why the hell should the US send their troops anywhere at all??
That's other country's business!
If you, Americans, found one day Germans, or Chinese, or someone else in the streets of your cities, telling you what to do, you wouldn't like it, would you?

About sending troops to Africa... US government insure people that they want to fight againt terrorism for the freedom and democracy around the world. So if they want it so they could help apopulation in countries like Kenya or Somalia.. people would be happy to be helped there

so no one should have helped stop the genocide going on in nazi ruled
Germany?...huh...interesting.... I agree that you should let other
countries handle their own business, but if they cant handle it
on their own, someone should help. maybe their misguided, but maybe
their spot on, but their just trying to help.
