Hello, marlen. Hello Markel, welcome to EnglishForums!
I like your thoughts!

Hello AYESHA,
〖RAIN〗!!
To be able to stay home peacefully, in the rain... a bit decadent happiness.

There are even tiny, trifle reasons, too. To feed pets, stroking their head. To imagine something!

I am not sure what makes happiness. I don't think you need some of the above list to make you feel happy. I agree with Robyn that happiness mainly depends on personal situation and attitude. But I suggest you to think in another angle, what makes people not happy or sad?

Buddha listed three main reasons for sadness and regretness:

Things you long for but can not get.

Things you lost.

And, departure of your lover.

Think about Buddha's list, do you agree?

Hello Ddm,
I'd disagree with ..ahem, Buddha. (Although I've never pondered upon what makes me unhappy actually....well, if I'm deprived of my mental/physical freedom, both at once, and there remains no possibility to retrieve them. Nobody would feel...however bold he is...happy, I guess. Silly nonsense?)

How about you, Ddm?

Hello Robyn, hello Roro

I too had often noticed Robyn's signature, with a kind of passing inner emoticon, and had assumed it meant what Robyn says it means; but now I am struck by a doubt.

If it means 'Despite the fact that there are loud and passionate holders of the opposite view', should it not be:

1. Vociferous proponents of the contrary thereof notwithstanding

– ?

(Sorry, I'm off topic. Hastily veering back in lane: 'What makes for happiness? Numerous small adjustments'.)

Hi, Roro. Happiness is always depend on one's feeling and attitude.

If someone is deprived of his freedom, he lost it. He maybe unhappy.

What we could learn from Buddha's words is the attitude towards the daily life of mankind, that is, to treasure our current life and do not ask too much from the others. Maybe I can not express this idea very well. What I mean is, if you ask too much but you can't get it, you may be unhappy. If you don't treasure what you have now, you maybe regret if you lost it one day.

Hello MrPedantic. In hindsight your doubt seems to make sense. Indeed!

At first〖Vociferous proponents〗reminds me of a kinda Zhirinovski, who appears, all of a sudden, contrary to all your expectations, as your proponent.

Ironically, 'proponents thereof' appears to be quite vociferous!
At first I guessed the meaning in such a vague way, without context, as a pungent epigram. Anyway it's very interesting, perplexing.

Hello Ddm, nice to meet you in this Forum.
I think I understand you (I'm Japanese by the way). And because I agree with your opinion,【Happiness is always depend on one's feeling and attitude】, I feel uneasy at your former quote from Buddha:
┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈
Buddha listed three main reasons for sadness and regretness:
Things you long for but can not get.
Things you lost.
And, departure of your lover.

I wondered: Not to be rude in any way! but isn't it too materiaristic for Buddha, of all saints??

Anyway I know little about it...even our moral concepts either.
Nice talking with you.

Hello, Roro. Since we are discussing, it is alway nice to have different view points.

I am not a monk though I admire Buddha. Of course Buddha is not a material person, for he is a real saint.

Buddha listed these reasons for human beings, not for himself. I learn it from a small story. People come to Buddha asking for help, because they think their lives are not so good, they want a better life, say, more money, more power, more jewelry. Those people feel painful, sad, regret for what they do not have, for what they have lost, for they have to leave their lovers. While Buddha, with his great wisdom, told them how to deal with those pains. It is the attitude towards those things outside your own body and mind makes people feel sad and painful instead of the things themselves. We must learn how to give up some certain things in our life, not try to clench everything in our fists. We must look throught the mist of this material world and find out the real meaning of human lives.

This can explains why some millionaires are unhappy because they think they need more money, while some poverties are more happy because they feel content and satisified with their life. And some people will never stop chasing for power but they never feel happy.  People always feel that "the things I do not have may be the best".

Roro, I can not remember what subject I was studying at the time let alone the name of the book or author.
Judging from that sentence alone, it is not a book I would recommend anyway.
