I can't get this word but its, in this novel, how the peasant role model of Communism fails when the peasants can be the opposite of its ideals.  Any suggestions?  It's sort of like how people change, like fake,   the things to suit their needs?

Pls give the exact quote. BTW, it's communism who is fake, not the peasants. They are real.

Ok, there's this guy who gets 'ditties' from a peasant when he needs 'sincere, authentic folk songs'.  Then he proceeds to modify the songs saying 'All I need to do is make a few alterations'.  He's changing what is real to fit his personal needs.  I've written that he's the opposite of the idealogy communism but I think there's a word that describes this with something more.

G'day Massala,

It sounds as though he is being treated condecendingly by the peasants who know that he intends to butcher their songs so they just give him fluff rather than substance so that they will not be offended by his 'improvments'.

This is a very common practice when dealing with outsiders.  It is employed to keep the secrets secret.
