I -- into the bath when the telephone --. A) was getting / rang B) got / rings C) will get / rang D) got / was ringing I'd go for A, though D also makes sense as it can mean "While I was getting into the bath, the telephone was ringing." What do you think? Do you think this is a good test question and would you use it?

Well, theoretically D is possible.  Realistically, it seems pretty unlikely.  How many people do you know who, upon hearing their telephone start to ring, would then choose to get into the bathtub rather than answer the phone?

If you want to be 100% beyond reproach on your test question, change D to something that isn't even remotely possible.

Well, the world is full of crazy people. :) I'm kidding! Thank you, Yankee.

When I see how people are using their cell phones nowadays, it sometimes seems that absolutely nothing takes priority over answering the ring of a phone.  On the other hand, I suppose some might just take their cell phone with them into the bathtub. Big Smile
