W is considered a vowel only because of words like "hollow" and "follow" and "mellow". In the soda, Mello Yello, they don't put the w's, why? because you don't need them to make the "O" sound. It's not "hollowuh", and people who drink the soda don't spaz when there's no w on the end. it doesn't change the pronunciation at all. this is where w would be considered a vowel.

Some people also consider it to be a vowel in "cow" beacause essentially the w is taking the place of a u (as in the ou in house). Again, it's not "cowuh".

Why don't they buy y's on Wheel of Fortune...do you have an answer for that??

So if you drop a final w, then the pronunciation doesn't change, you say?  And that's why w isn't a vowel.  I see.

-- I'd like a fe copies of this recipe.
-- Ho soon do you want it done?
-- Right no, please.
-- Is it a ne recipe?
-- Yes, it's a ne recipe for ste.

Hmm.  I guess by that logic w isn't a vowel.

According to the official rules of Wheel of Fortune only A, E, I, O, and U (fiive of the seven vowel letters) can be bought in that game.  There is nothing in the rules that says only those five letters are vowels, nor does there need to be.  It's a game, not a classroom.

Dear Cyndi:

You have actually asked two questions in your posting:  (1) Is the letter w a vowel?  and (2) For how long have schools been teaching that the letter w is a vowel?

Regarding (1), the answer is that w can be both a vowel and a consonant.

Regarding (2), at least since 1861 in the United States.

My proof is the following:  I quote from an American English grammar textbook from the year 1861:

What I find particularly interesting about the following section I quote is that, at the very end of it, the author points out that the letters u and i as well can be either vowels or consonants.

"The vowels are a, e, i, o, u; also w and y, when not followed by a vowel sound in the same syllable [emphasis added].

"They can be sounded alone, and represent each several inarticulate elementary sounds. (Except w.)

"Ex. -- Fate, fare, fat, far, fall; me, met; fine, fin, fatigue; no, not, dove, prove, book; use, us, full; city, cry; brow, dew, boy.

"The consonants are all the letters except the vowels.

"They are so called because they can not be sounded alone; or rather, when they are uttered alone, the sound of a vowel is always heard with them.

"Ex.--B, c, d, f, m, k, are pronouned as if written be, se, de, ef, em, ka.

"W or y is a consant when a vowel sound follows it in the same syllable; as in water, young, year, Iowa, Buynan.

U and i are consonants when equivalent to the consants w and y; as in persuade, poniard.--X=ks, gz, or z; as in tax, exalt, Xerxes."

Yes, W is a Vowel.  The show Jeopardy had the final Jeopardy question as.

A, E, I, O, U, Y and this letter are the Vowels in the English Language.

All the contestants got the correct answer, W.

If Jeopardy says W is an English Vowel, then W is a Vowel.

I am in college and have to do a lesson plan using Y and W as vowels. I was a little surprised also , since i am 46 years old and wasn't taught this either.

"W" is definitely not a vowel.

Why then is a "y" used in the words MY, BY, TRY, etc. if it is not a vowel (sometimes).  All English words must contain at least one vowel..so I am told.
