 Hi,

Could you please tell me if there's any rule regarding when to use "as" and when to use "when" in such sentences as below:

1) The thought occurred to me as I was watching the show.
2) The thought occurred to me when I was watching the show.

I personally tend to use the second one all the time. Are they used interchangeably?

Thanks.

Hi,
I think "as" in those contexts usually means either "while" or "as soon as". So I wouldn't say it usually means "when", generally speaking. Anyway, in most cases, you can avoid using "as" at all, and you can easily choose between "when" and "while". Smile
Just my opinion.

Thanks, Kooyeen

By the way, after googling it a liitle bit, I came across a web page that describes different adverb clauses with time expressions. If someone's still interested, here is the link:

http://esl.about.com/library/grammar/blgr_adverbclauses_time.htm

So, the right answer to my question would be the first sentence.
