In what context should the and symbol "&" be used?

 

Let me put it this way. Generally speaking, it should not be used in formal writing.

 

I don't think I ever use it. It takes almost no longer to just write 'and'.

 

It sometimes appears in the names of businesses, eg Smith & Sons.

 

It's common in the world of computer programming names and languages.
