Check this sentence

"Rapidly changing technical fields such as software manufacturing require constant updating of equipments in order to remain competitive."

I find it in the structure section of a toefl test and i chose "require" as an answer because i was thinking thta should be "requires"..but when cheking the answer sheet  i find that  equipments was the wrong part because it needs an article.

Why  "require" is  correst ??

The changing fields (plural) require contant updating. Requires must agree with the subject, fields, not the noun that comes closest to it, manufaturing.

Equipments is wrong, not because it needs an article, but because it's not countable. It should be "equipment."
