Hi

Are these two words always interchangeable?

1. I wonder if they will ever do it.

2. I wonder whether they will ever do it.

thanks

Most of the time.

It is better for you to search them on the search box right above because this has been discussed before.

No.

For example, you cannot use 'whether' in the following conditional sentences:

If I won the lottery, I would buy a yacht.

If it is sunny tomorrow, we are going to go on a picnic.

The word 'whether' suggests 'or not'.

But isn't if you used is a different one than we use interchangably with whether?

Another question: Did you understand what I asked? Big Smile [:D]

Take care.

Hi Doll

I understood Newguest's question to be whether the words 'if' and 'whether' are always interchangeable.  And my response to that was that they are not.  My examples were of conditional sentences in which you cannot exchange 'whether' for 'if'.

Here is another sentence:

Whether or not it is sunny tomorrow, we are going to go on a picnic.

I don't think it likely that someone would try to use 'if' instead of 'whether' in that sentence.  You could possibly rephrase that last example this way:

Even if the weather is not sunny tomorrow, we are going to go on a picnic.

However, that is not just a simple exchange of two words.
