«There were two shop assitants in the shop, both of which said "good morning".»

I don't think that's what K. meant. In the first case we are talking about
a
son and
a
daughter -- generic use. In the 'two shop assistants' case we are talking about those specific people, both of
whom
said "Good morning". K. will clarify further if necessary.
