Which appears P<0.005?

Hi,

Context:

   Mutations occurred predominantly (in >75% of the children) in MYH7 and MYBPC3; significantly more MYBPC3 missense mutations were detected than occur in adult-onset cardiomyopathy (P<0.005). Neither hypertrophic severity nor contractile function correlated with familial or genetic status.

     I think (P<0.005) refers to "more MYBPC3 missense mutations were detected in childhood-onset cardiomyopathy," not refers to "the same mutations were detected in adult-onset cardiomyopathy."

   Am I on the right track?

Most English speakers without technical knowledge of this topic would interpret  (P<0.005) to refer to adult-onset cardiomyopathy.

P<0.005 is a statistic "thing" which means that your data is significant. This has been put there in order to justify that "significantly" that is at the beginning of the sentence. In fact in scientific papers you can never write "significantly" if you don't write the value of P. Usually when the value is >0.005 the statistic is not significant.
In other words the meaning of the original sentence is: We significantly found out that  more MYBPC3 ....etc.... than ... etc. ... we can say that because the P value was <0.005
