Hi

Similarly, in Plato’s description of the mythic island of Atlantis – which

some scholars believe was a folk memory of the unfallen culture of ancient Crete

– he states that the people “[bore] lightly the burden of gold and other property

they possessed; neither were they intoxicated by luxury, nor did wealth deprive

them of their self-control and thereby cause their downfall.

--- I'm not sure I understand the part in bold. Can you explain that me?

We often speak of the FALL of this or that ancient civilization, usually attributing it to greed and excessive behavior of various kinds.

The author makes the point that Crete did not fall, nor was it plagued by the "attitudes" which have destroyed other civilizations.

A folk memory is the collection of myths and tales which a culture accumulates.  Some scholars believe that the myth of Atlantis relates to the Cretian heritage.
