I can't find it now, but when I first joined, I read a sort of official explanation of the policy, to the effect that there are professional reasons why some posters must remain anonymous. Come to think of it, functional anonymity re the "outside world" is achieved as effectively by a "user name."  You could even lie about your sex if you chose to. Avangi
