“ Whence this recent campaign?

In 30 years of public school teaching, I know that the better I knew my students the more I was able to help them.  We get to "know" students here if we have a name for them, making it easier to relate to previous problems they've asked about.

Thanks for doing that, Avangi.  I had intended to offer a welcom to Kelly but signed off without doing it.

I just posted a question as an anonymous user.  Why?

1.  I just discovered your site so I'm not registered yet.

2.  It took me 10 minutes to type a 1 minute question because I am constantly interrupted so,

3.  I don't have time right now.  (It takes time to think of a screen name, etc. and I'm not computer savy).

So, I'll register shortly, but can't this minute.

Thanks for a great site!

Hi, Philip,

I certainly don't enjoy answering anonymous posts.  I was simply puzzled by the administration's sudden change of heart.

I can't find it now, but when I first joined, I read a sort of official explanation of the policy, to the effect that there are professional reasons why some posters must remain anonymous.

Come to think of it, functional anonymity re the "outside world" is achieved as effectively by a "user name."  You could even lie about your sex if you chose to.

I believe there was a New Yorker cartoon some years back showing a dog typing at a terminal, and the caption was "On the internet no one knows you're a dog."
