Hi,

Why do some books use so much difficult english even when easy alternatives are available? Like many books use thou, thee, and, thine etc. English translation of Bible is very difficult. In many of the sentences easy english can be used but still much hard english words are used.

It’s a difficult question for any man to answer… Whether to follow his dreams no matter what… Or to give in slowly and let life lead you where it will.

Simplicity is not always good.

Middle English conveys the atmosphere and feel of the old times.

If the simlier meant the better everybody would write like 7-9-year children.

Because many books are not written for non-English native speakers. What you complain about would be true of books in any language. Simple language is used for learners, complex language is accepted as normal for those who are educated. Persistence is needed in order to become fluent.

Simple language makes the thoughts expressed seem simple or even trivial.
Complex language makes the thoughts expressed seem complicated and even important.
Thou wouldst not wish the Bible to seem trivial, wouldst thou?  Smile [:)]

And if you want to read a Bible without seeing a thee or a thou - there are plenty of modern English versions to choose from, e.g. ...

Dear Annvan,

What do you mean by modern English? Do you mean that Bible uses old English?

If your Bible is full of thees and thous it is probably a King James Bible. This is the popular traditional bible but it was written in the early 17th century, so it is not in modern language. Even native speakers can find it difficult. There are modern language bibles available as well.

The name says it all.

Dear nona,

That means there have been different changes in today's English as we compare it to English of centuries ago. Not only English, almost every language changes with the passage of time. Like literature written two or three centuries ago is somewhat obscure to readers of present days. Right?
