Hi,

I think this forum has dealt with this situation before but for the sake of personal clarity, let me humbly ask you again.

What is the rationale for using the article 'a' in front the words like 'first' and 'last'?

a first person to finish the line

A last person in line will receive a prize.

'The' refers to that particular person.

For example, 'This is the man who robbed me', not 'This is a man who robbed me.'
