Why using the words "very"?

Sorry for my bad English, I saw this word in the CBS News

The arrival of the porcupine surprised CBS 11 meteorologist Julie Bologna, who is very pregnant. Her response set off the lemur, which immediately started in with a screeching mating call.

I want to ask why using "very"??

Who is pregnant is ok, but why using very pregnant? Does it means she is time to born a child??

Thanks!

Hello Ckwek, welcome to English Forums!

It means she is far advanced in her pregnancy. It's a slightly jocular formation.
