Hi guys,

Is it correct to use why'd instead of why did in a formal essay, or is this for informal use only?

Many thanks in advance!

.
Virtually all contractions should be avoided in formal writing, with the exception of 'o'clock'.

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master-- that's all.'

Thank you - I am correct in thinking though that 'd can stand for 'did' though aren't I?

Hi Andy.

In most cases, 'd = had or would. He'd = he had or he would, but not he did.

Your example of why'd is a verbal contraction of why did.  It's an exception to the 'd general use.
