Will I ever meet my soul mate?

How would you interpret the above in simple English, especially "ever" and "soul mate?" Thanks.

Soul mate
noun
One of two persons compatible with each other in disposition, point of view, or sensitivity.

(thefreedictionary.com — try looking up words there)

"Ever" in this case means "at any time".

Thanks, Ant.

Just to make sure, which one of the following is close to the base question semantically?

Will I at any time meet my soul mate?

Will I have the chance to meet my soul mate in the future?

Will I meet my soul mate at any time in the future?

By the way, is my sould mate the opposite sex, or is it possible that we are the same sex?

Hello Angli,

I don't see Ant online, so will try to answer your questions.

"Ever" means "at any time in the future", but also has a certain emotional force, in this kind of context: it implies a limitless future.

"Soul mate" usually implies (perhaps paradoxically) a member of the sex that you would prefer sexually. However, it can also be used in the context of very good friends of the same (or the opposite) sex.

"Soul mate" carries a sense not simply of compatibility, but of optimum compatibility.

Best wishes,

MrP
