Will or Would

The first visit was assumed to be the last one. The dentist will [or would?] check my teeth, clean them smoothly and then leave my teeth alone happily.

I assume this first visit was in the past. In that case, would.

 Thank you Marius Hancu!

But assumption in past wouldn't make it "will" ?

as i am assuming he will think like this.

 No.

Learn this:

I assume that this will be his last visit. [the visit will come in the future

I assumed  that this would be his last visit. [the visit was to come in a future in the past

Will changes to would in the past.

Hi,

Many thanks, Mister Micawber

As usual, my question was incomplete.

he degree of certainty is higher if you use the word will. Would is used to indicate a more theoretical (less real) or a more tentative situation
