I wished to have called on you last night, but I was too busy.

I wished to call on you last night, but I was too busy.

Which one of the above makes more sense to you and why? Thanks.

Hi Angliholic

I wouldn't use wish in either of your sentences. I would use the verb want in the format you used in the second sentence:
I wanted to call on/visit you last night, but I was too busy.

I'd use wish this way, for example:
I wish I could have called on/visited you last night, but I was too busy.

How rude!!! Smile [:)]  Even changing wished to wanted won't save that aspect of the sentence!  Smile [:)]
