With a comma or without a comma

When I write a letter,

 

Dear Mr Smith

 

Dear Mr Smith,

 

which one is correct?

Hello Cateran

Both are correct in British English. But if you omit the comma after "Dear Mr Smith", you should also omit it after "Yours sincerely".

It may be different in American English.
