wonder - ^
wander - O

As far as I know, americans tend to spell "o" as "a" in some words. That's what could have confused you (and me).

Hi,

Is it normal to mispronounce wonder? I can hear people constantly say /wOnder/, as opposed to normal /w^nder/, which should be pronounced like, e.g. in a cup.
If there wasn't another word, to wander, I woulnd't care.... Am I too petty? Smile [:)]

You're right. The first syllable of 'wonder' should be pronounced as 'one'. It is the same as in 'wonderful'.

I hope this helps.

I've never heard of or noticed any such tendency.  Do you have examples?

Words like these are spelled differently:
doc [dɔk]
what [wɔt]
cops [kɔp]
lock [lɔk]

Perhaps you mean Americans pronounce them slightly differently.  These words are spelled identically in British and American English.

My dictionaries do not indicate that there is a difference in pronunciation between BrE and AmE for the the word 'wonder'.

I am not an expert in languages. I heard they spell it with ɑ: instead of ɔ
I am sure that I remember a school-book with these differences. I saw the spelling transcriptions.

 wonder pronounced = [w-un-der].
wander pronounced = [wand-er] as in magic [wand].
