You're right. The first syllable of 'wonder' should be pronounced as 'one'. It is the same as in 'wonderful'.

My dictionaries do not indicate that there is a difference in pronunciation between BrE and AmE for the the word 'wonder'.
wonder pronounced = [w’-un-der]. wander pronounced = [wand-er] as in magic [wand].
