Hey everyone, I have a couple of questions regarding the English grammar... It's regarding a word puzzle I'm working on... I know it's nothing close to the extraordinary levels, but it's got me befuddled and I'd like some of your opinions, please....Smile [:)]

01. S T R _ N _

The clue is: To many women a ... of fine pearls would be a welcome gift. I'm thinking string or strand but I'm not sure which is appropriate!

02. _ A _ _ L E D

The clue is: A difficult job is likely to be .... confidently by an expert.
I have a few choices but I'd like to find out what everyone thinks about this.

03. T _ _ E S

The clue is: Old friends may recall with pleasure some ... of their younger days. I don't think "times" is appropriate but I could be wrong. What do you think?

04. _ A R _ E D

The clue is: Fabric is liable to be ... permanently by a cigarette burn.
I have no clue at all on this. What do you suggest?

Any suggestion is more than welcome! Thank you very very much!

Thanks so much! I have a few questions about them though... I hope it's alright to ask..

1. A lot of dictionaries gave "strand of pearls" as examples so I'm a wondering is there anything wrong with using "strand" in the sentence?

2. Could "saddled" be a possible answer too?

4. Is "marred" a possible answer and is it applicable to the sentence?

Thank you so much once again!

1.. the word strand is used as in a strand of hair, it can only be used to describe something that is itself a long ... strand...

like a strand of hair, thats possible, hair is the thing on your head, a strand of hair is one fiber.

2. no saddled could not be a possible answer.

4. marred... i suppose you could use it if you couldnt remember the word marked, but marred is usually used to describe emotional or mental damage, or damage to something non physical ..

e.g. johns reputation was marred after his affair

at least i think... dont hold me to number 4 but the first 2 im right about

"string" is definitely the correct answer

"handled" is the answer for the second one

how about "stories" , or "memories" for the third: either on would be fine.

I think "damaged" is the best answer, but others could work, such as "discoloured", or "marked".

STRING... no such thing as a strand of pearls
