On November 5, 1858, John Paton and his wife and another missionary safely landed on Tanna. Their first job was to finish building their house and then try to work their way into the good will of the natives.

Hi,

Does the bolded part in the above mean "work hard in order to win the hearts of the good-will natives?" If not, what does it mean? Thanks.

In essence, they had to make sure that the people who were native to the area liked and/or accepted them.

Thanks, Yankee.

I know the meaning of the whole phrase "work their way into the good willl of the natives, but why does it mean so. Could you explain it word by word or litterally so that I can get the hang of it? Thanks again.
