Hello to everyone,
I'm a student from Germany and wish to spend one year abroad. Therefore
I'm applying for a scholarship hosted by my home university in
cooperation with the host university.
Since it's my first time to write a letter of motivation in English, I
would be glad if someone would check the letter below for grammatical
and linguistic mistakes. I feel happy about every advice from you!
Thanks a lot for your help!
Thomas
Letter of Motivation
I am currently studying <subject> with <subject> as a minor
at the <home university> at <city> in my third semester.
With support from the <scholarship> hosted by the
<institution> I would like to attend the <host university>
at <city> from <date> to <date>.
Spending one academic year in the United States provides me with an
outstanding opportunity to advance my English learning proficiency.
Further, I am able to improve my communication skills by conversing
with native English speakers. Attending <subject> courses, that
aren’t offered at my home institution, pushes the boundaries of my
knowledge in understanding significant questions concerning
<subject>. Considering that modern economics increasingly discuss
topics related to the matters of globalization, achieving an
international perspective on those aspects is indispensable for the
success of my further studies. My stay abroad affords the unique
possibility to broaden my horizons by learning about the American
culture with its typical features – the American Way of Life. Sharing
experiences with both American and international students will extend
my intercultural understanding. In addition, I will strengthen my
personality by developing essential social skills like tolerance,
open-mindedness and flexibility. Finally, I am interested in the
American educational system, particularly in its inherent differences
to the German one.
The personal experience and the comprehensive knowledge acquired at a
foreign university will prove to be very helpful in finding a job upon
graduating and will prepare myself for a wide range of career options.
The <host university> provides me with first-rate preconditions to reach my full academic potentials.
Especially the College of Business Administration distinguishes through
a creative learning environment that is supported by diverse staff,
small average class sizes and research-based education. Strong
connections with the region’s business community ensure the practical
orientation of my studies. As there are numerous student organizations
and sport clubs to join, I will get acquaintances easily and will be
able to establish a social environment quickly. The extraordinary racial and ethnic diversity of the student body at
<host university> as well as the high amount of international
students with diverse backgrounds enhance my cultural experience and
the exchange of ideas with fellow students.
Further, <city> is a great starting point to get to know the
country and its people by travelling about the Great Lakes Area.
During my stay at <host university>, I wish to extend and intensify my knowledge on Business Administration.
I
am going to enrol for the fall term and the spring term with a course
load of about <number> hours per semester, that is to say
<number> three-hours-courses each term. I am most interested in
courses covering
the following subjects: accounting, finance and marketing. In addition,
I intend to take one course in economics. If possible, I prefer to
attend not only undergraduate but also graduate courses. As this
depends on the specific course prerequisites, I will have to ask for
the concerned lecturers’ agreements.
Since the < scholarship> would exempt me from paying tuition
fees, I wouldn’t have to job to finance my stay abroad and could focus
on studying and participating in extra-curricular activities.
