I always get confused when the 'to' should be used in such cases:
Why don't you write me?
vs
Why don't you write to me?
Thanks

No difference in meaning. Some verbs permit the omission of prepositions under various conditions. If there were a direct object, the prepositional form would have to be placed after it:
Please write me.
Please write me a letter.
Please write to me.
Please write a letter to me.

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master-- that's all.'
