Hi ,
I have learned a lot from this forum! After I read this section, I have a question like, when you write a resume and they ask to send to Human Resources. In this case, do I say Dear HR? Or To HR Dept.?
Thanks,
Ky

Hello,

I seriously dislike using the word dear in a formal letter. Dear means "loved one." To whom it may concern sounds bad. Why can't I find a normal greeting that doesn't mean honey, lovely, sincere, or darling?

Hi SM,

You could go with "Hey You!" but I would advise against it.

We don't attach any meaning to Dear other than an opening salutation.

Hope this helps.

I'm learning English. I've got a task in the class. I need some informaton.

The task is that I have to collect information for my boss who is going to write a letter to the prime minister and the mayor of the city. He needs the most suitable salutation for this.

You mentioned that you usualy use 'Dear Smith', if you know the person's name is 'Smith'.

In this task, we definitely know the name of  the prime minister. Could we use the name in this letter? Should we use other salutation?

Dear Smith is not quite right.

You need to use Mr Smith, Mrs Smith or Ms Smith.

The name says it all.

I simply write Mrs/Miss before her last name.  Why do women suddenly get offended with that?  How did they feel before this stupid "Ms" thing?  Surprise [:O]  Big deal, just write Mrs/Miss X!  Big Smile [:D]
