He turned around and saw that he was alone-- his guide had disappeared / vanished!  Would you please have a look at this ? 
 Sir Marmaduke Candlestick avançait lentement dans la jungle lorsqu'il se rendit soudain compte qu'il avait oublié de prendre sa carte. IL se retourna et vit qu'il était seul : son guide avait disparu. Il regarda autour de lui et sentit que quelqu'un l'observait ...  
  
 Sir Marmaduke Candlestick was slowly walking / advancing (?) into the jungle when he suddenly realized that he had forgotten to take his map. He backed and saw he was alone: his guide had disappeared / vanished / his guide missed (correct ?). He looked round him and he felt somebody (was ?) watching him.
