so you can&amp;#39;t make an exact subsitution.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;b&gt;It&lt;/b&gt; turns out that they ...&lt;/i&gt;, but &lt;i&gt;They ended up ---ing&lt;/i&gt;.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Not &lt;i&gt;It ends up that they ...&lt;/i&gt;, nor &lt;i&gt;They turn out ---ing&lt;/i&gt;. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;It turns out that they went to college together.&lt;/i&gt;
= The facts that were revealed in the course of the conversation were
such that we ultimately realized that they had gone to college
together.&amp;nbsp;  &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;i&gt;They ended up going to college together.&lt;/i&gt;&amp;nbsp;
=&amp;nbsp; As the result of the course of events and/or decisions leading
up to their actions, they went to college together. = The final result
