We hopped into our car and went / left for home happily.

If you actually reached home as planned, then either one is fine. However, if you intended to go home but then had all sorts of adventures before arriving, "left for home" wound be better in the original sentence.

We hopped in our car and went home, and spent the rest of the evening watching tv.

We hopped in our car and left for home, but then we were kidnapped by aliens and spent the next thirty years in their space ship.

Should I use 'went' or 'left for'? It is common to see 'went home'. But I feel it's funny because 'went home' seems to mean that 'I reached home the next instant'. It is as though I went home in a rocket.
