Actually lack means deficiency or absence of something needed, desirable, or customary:like , lack of money; lack of skill.

or something missing or needed:as , After he left, they really felt the lack.

But here cut means abridged or shortened or stopped .

So if you use lack instead of cut the sense will surely change

It doesn't quite have the same meaning. The word 'cuts' make it seem like something WAS there but now is not. The 'lack of..' makes it seem like there never was anything.

The original sentence is

Yet many schools across the country have reduced their physical education programs. Criticism of the cuts has led in some places to efforts to give students more time for exercise, not less.

can i change like this

Yet many schools across the country have reduced their physical education programs. Criticism of the lack of physical educations has led in some places to efforts to give students more time for exercise, not less.

does it give the same meaning with original sentence?

please help me ..
