I encountered these while practicing for the SAT

I don't understand what these following statements say:

1) Sans love, what does the author purport to be the state of woman in this world?

(one of the answer choices) : a conduit of pleasure greatly sought particularly as a result of her own adornment

What does sought mean here?

2) Perhaps this is the main value of a habit of writing, of keeping a journal- that so we rember our best hours and stimulate ourselves
