It doesn't have to be past perfect. Simple past is just fine.

... the way I intended. ... the way I had intended

Either of the two tenses is correct.

Sorry, I should have searched for a different phrase but in haste, I accidently searched for something that might/may have any pertinece to me at all.

I should have searched for the phrase "has never played out"

Original example sentence (note: a misspelling: not 'put' but 'out'

It has never played put the way I had intended.

Can you tell me why it has to be a past perfect tense for the part underlined since I don't think it has to be that.

It's very difficult to choose a comment that might prove instructive to you, as it is difficult to understand your purpose in posting these search results.

The search indicates that it is possible to find examples of "did not work the way I".

Are you saying you were surprised to find these? That you thought there was something incorrect about this group of words? Are you in doubt about the meaning of these words?

Could you please clarify your question?

1. Do you think the past perfect tense is correct? I feel just a past tense is correct. I don't see a reason for the need for the past perfect tense. I thought what follows usually after a present perfect is a past tense, not a past perfect.

It has never played put the way I had intended.

2. I think the modal 'may' is not right. I think the phrase with it is denoting a past thought of his and to use 'amy" seem incorrect.

I am forced to concede that this may not have been the right one for my friends.
