However, the "Longman Lexicon of Contemporay English" quotes the masculine of "cat" as "tabby". 'Stud' is not synonymous with 'stallion'. A stud is a stallion kept for breeding purposes.  2. 'Tabby' for 'female cat' is slightly misleading. 'Tabby' also simply = a 'brindled cat'.  3. 'Tomcat' means a male cat that hasn't been neutered. Are you sure you've typped it correctly?   Here "dogs", lions which are male. How can they give birth to young ones.   Dog and lion are names for a type of animal. It refers to all in a general sense; young and old, male and female. There are more specific terms to describe gender and relative age.
