 I am trying to understand why I can&amp;#39;t use a proper noun in such a situation. Consider the following sentences.    I think she was just saying you should have capitalized it: Windows Vista. The sentence was ok.  The machine has  the  Windows V ista operating system. OK  
 The machine has Windows Vista as the operating system. OK    The most natural expressions are    Windows Vista is installed on that computer.    Windows Vista is the operating system on that computer.
