However, I would like to give another insight about the origin of the controversy.
Continents have been historically divided and named by Europeans according to our own standards. First of all, even though we do not live in a land fully surrounded by seas or oceans, we named our continent, Europe, and established cultural borders. Thus, the rest of the world consisted on two differenciated blocks: Asia and Africa.
After several centuries, Europeans discovered two new worlds: America, a vast mass of land to the west and Australia/Oceania. Here, we did the opposite. Instead of artificially dividing geografical continents, we gave one single name to the new world...

Re: How many continents do you think there are?

i think 22

I found this out one year when I lived in Germany. In Germany they are taught 6 they consider Europe and Asia on continent called Euraisa. It is true. He in the states most people are taught 7, and last in other parts of europ such as france they are taught 5 I don't know why 5. Though I would have to say it seems obvious that there is a clear difference between the landmass of N. America and S.America, and besides the Central American are relitivly new in the world, whereas before North and South America were split.

A GEOGRAPHICAL PERSPECTIVE
Dear viewers,
Being a geographer, I think it my utmost duty to explain the CONTINENTS
CONTINENTS A term given to the large landmasses and associated islands on the Earth's surface are generally and geologically SEVEN in number, namely :

 ASIA
 AFRICA
 NORTH AMERICA
 SOUTH AMERICA
 ANTARCTICA
 EUROPE
 AUSTRALIA
please note the following points on how and why geographers, historians and some countries use different meanings of the continents :

Geoligically, there are SEVEN continents as mentioned above
ANTARCTICA, the world's 5th largest continent is uninhabited, therefore it is mostly ignored ..................that...

Re: How many continents do you think there are?

Squeaky wrote:

However, I recently learned than in Latin America, many of the landmasses considered to be made up of separate contintents by American academics are considered to be one whole continent. They categorize the world's continents as América (North and South America), Antártida (Antarctica), Eurafrasia (Europe, Africa, and Asia), and Australia . So, I was wondering how the world's continents were divided and categorized in other countries.
