In the context of education/academe, thesis is a scholarly written document which is a required output for MS/MA students on the other had dissertation is a scholarly document which is a required output for PhD/Ed.D. In terms of scope, a dissertation requires higher data analysis and as much as possible itshould have atleast 5 variables (for quantitative dissertations) while a thesis can have less than 5 variables. Furthermore, in a thesis the student is required to test a theory that is already existing however, for dissertation students are encourage to establish their own theory in order to add to the body of knowledge.
