Exiting! *gg* From my point of view, trying to find the "best" accent is impossible as well as unnecessary. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, or in this case of the listener. Personally, I consider the Australian and the American accent as very nice, maybe because they are the the easiest to understand for me. Funny enough, although I'm from Austria, which is located quite near to Britain, I'm struggling to understand the british accent from time to time. Especially in comedy or sitcoms they speak so fast, that I sometimes just give up to follow the speech. By the way, does anyone know Eddie Izzard? I think his British accent makes him even funnier than he already is.

Re: The Best English Accent

Nereus wrote:

I personally wouldn't force anyone to change their accent. However, I understand those who really don't want to sound foreign every time they speak a word of English. Questions such as "Where are you from?" and "How come you speak such excellent English?" might be taken as compliments at first, but if you live in an English-speaking country for several decades it becomes a bit tiresome to deal with such inquisitive questions every single day.
When you speak of French-English and Spanish-English accents, are you referring to foreign accents or mixed accents? If you have a British-sounding accent, or a British-Chinese mixed accent, I think most Americans will understand you perfectly well. There are many more similarities than differences between the British and American sound systems, so it's more likely people won't understand you because you have a strong Chinese accent, for instance, than if you have a mild British-English-influenced Chinese accent.

I'm sorry to say that, as long as there will be different races and different languages, the question of accent will still exist, and threads such as this one will still be up-to-date, because generation after ours, will rise them. Globalisation will fail to overcome those kind of differences. I strongly believe the best English accent,( actually whatever the language) is....your natural accent. Having the "accent",especially for a learner, I think should not be the primary concern. Let's learn the Language first, the accent will come all by itself. A Chinese friend of mine asked me once while we were chatting, what was my accent? British or American? When I told him my accent is nothing less than Cameroonian, he couldn't believe it , yet it's true. I'm more concerned about the language, and because there are people with different accents, I try to get use to their accent in order to be able follow people of that country when they speak.
