I have to write a review on 'Oranges are not the olny fruit'. I have a lot of problems with putting things into words. I don't really understand the end of the book, that's why the summary part isn't very good, in my opinion. Also, I think that the summary is too long. I don't know, but maybe the end of my review is a bit too confusing. Could you help me, please? It's an assignment I have to do, it's part of continuous assessment, and this assignment will be very important for the marks I get at the end of the year.

Review: Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit

With oranges are not the only fruit (Please capitalize the title), Jeanette Winterson combines the art of skilful, stylistic and humorous writing style with the ability of producing a novel with a message.Jeanette is the adopted child of a mother who is fervently religious and who raised her to be a missionary. In Church, it is thought that Jeanette is âfull of the spirit.â[1] When she becomes stone, this believe lessens, and she has to undergo an operation. From this moment on, we are able to discover, step by step, the meaning of the title, which makes the story ~~much the~~ better, as you have to work on it. When Jeanette is in the hospital, her mother always brings her oranges. âOranges are the only fruit,â[2] she explains to Jeanette. In her opinion, Christianity is the only true religion, homosexuality is a sin and black people are bad.Then it turns out that Jeanette is lesbian: one day, she meets a girl called Melanie with whom she falls in love. She manages to convict Melanie to Protestantism, but when she confesses to her mother about her affection for a girl, the latter becomes furious, and tells the Church about the relationship. A crucial moment comes when during the mass on Sunday, the pastor says: âThese children of God have fallen under Satanâs spell. These children are full of demons.â [3] Jeanette is locked up until she is declared to be âhealthyâ again. Peace seems to return, but then Jeanette falls in love with Katy. Although their relationship is kept secret, the Church discovers it again. She decides to leave the Church and her parents, to go to live with Katy. In fact, little by little, she discovered that âOranges are not the only fruit.â

(New paragraph) A writer who is able to deliver this message with such a powerful imagery must belong to the real masters.While reading I wondered whether it was an autobiography or not â Jeanette Winterson herself was also an adopted child, and her mother raised her to be a missionary and she left home because of the facts she was lesbian was opposed by her parents. Nevertheless, the author claims it is not true. âI wouldnât believe that âOranges is my life if I were you. I think that would be a great mistake. I wanted to invent myself as a fictional character. And I did.â[4] Winterson keeps switching between her story and legends and fairy tales, which makes the narrative rather complex. Sometimes I could see the link with the proper story, but it is often a mystery what the relevance of those passages is.At parts, âOranges are not the only fruitâ is rather tedious. By moments I had to chew on the orange that the book is. But I enjoyed doing it, and I would recommend everyone to do it too: the structure, the language and the style, everything is wonderfully elaborated. Of course I do recognize that âOranges are not the only fruitâ. âOrangesâ is not the only book written by Jeanette Winterson, and that is why I want to discover âthe other childrenâ she has created. âArts and Liesâ and âThe Worldâ are already at the top of the list of books to read.
