Re: Let's discuss
Hello, Kenduong In your question, you mentio "to-infinitive + adverb", yet in your examples the construction is "to + infinitive + adverb" (this is called in English "split infinitive" since the particle "to2 and the main part of the verb are separeted by an adverb). You can use an adverb after...

Re: A lot and lots
What really hurts my brain is this: what part of speech is "a lot" in the following sentence, and why do you need an article: "I love her a lot!" Isn't this a valid sentence? An adverb that is two words long...? odd! Of course, I have no evidence for any of this.

Re: Nine Parts of Speech
I've never counted, but here goes: noun, pronoun, article, adjective, adverb, verb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. I suppose a pronoun could be considered just a type of noun. And what about proper nouns?

Re: The more politely of the two
Thank you very much. Yes, I think the sentence using an adjective "polite" is correct, too. The problem is I'm not so sure when an adverb is used in this pattern. a. Tom is the more polite (one) of the two (boys).---correct. b. Tom behaves the more politely (one) of the two (boys).---wrong. As...

Re: Parts of speech, tenses and general questions
Hi JP NEEDS is the verb, and TO DISPLAY is an infinitive in this sentence. When you have a verb following another verb, it's usually an infinitive. The "to" in front is also a clue. FLEXIBLE is an adjective, modifying attitude. The rest is correct. Keep in mind that articles are sub-types of...

Re: Tom behaves the more politely of the two.
Thank you very much for your answer. Could I ask again? All the examples I have come across of this "the COMPARATIVE of the two" pattern are those using adjectives, not adverbs. a. The older of the two boys is in college. b. Of gold and silver, the former is the more precious. c. About half...
