Re: Prepositional phrases??
Hello again, Lupa Thank you for posting again. Now I understand what you have been asked to do. It seems I was looking for something more complicated, or something "tricky" behind that question! Anyway, I don't think you will find all three combinations in those two sentences. Let's see...

Re: Prepositional phrases??
Hello again, Lupa Sorry I couldn't come back online earlier. I found out later that the problem was my phone line, not my poor server. It seems to have been fixed now. Going back to your question, I'm not sure what your teacher was referring to when they asked about "verb + participle" and...

Re: Prepositions meaningless x meaningful ?
Hi again, Lupa Certain word categories (such as prepositions, articles and conjunctions among others) are called "function" or "structure" words, as opposed to "content" words (nouns, lexical verbs, adjectives, adverbs). Some grammarians say that "function" words convey no meaning (on...

Re: Let's discuss
Hello, Kenduong In your question, you mentio "to-infinitive + adverb", yet in your examples the construction is "to + infinitive + adverb" (this is called in English "split infinitive" since the particle "to2 and the main part of the verb are separeted by an adverb). You can use an adverb...

Discourse operators
Is Discourse operator the same notion (idea) as The discourse markers? i'm trying to understand the difference here... my professor gave me a task to write a short report on discourse operators and their transposition of meanings. e.g. "only" originally is a a particle , ,"well " - an adverb,...

Re: A lot and lots
What really hurts my brain is this: what part of speech is "a lot" in the following sentence, and why do you need an article: "I love her a lot!" Isn't this a valid sentence? An adverb that is two words long...? odd! Of course, I have no evidence for any of this.

Re: Nine Parts of Speech
I've never counted, but here goes: noun, pronoun, article, adjective, adverb, verb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. I suppose a pronoun could be considered just a type of noun. And what about proper nouns?

Re: Old fashioned??
It'd have to be "nearby" for me. I don't think I can use "near" as an adverb, or at least not in the way it's used in the example. -Aaron J. Dinkin Dr. Whom
