To me, "should have done something" connotes "*ought* to have done", but the author of the second quote is not using it in that way. I understand that usage of "should", but I don't see why Lodge used

As an American, I always treat Legos as countable. This is the first I've heard that they could be thought of as mass. Of course, this is not the only pondian difference in countability: Chicago has won the game. Manchester have won the match.
