Thanks for your information, that's what I want to differenciate between phrasal verb, which usually followed by pre[osition, and compound verb. By the way, compound verb is rarely used in conversation.

I guess you could say that if you can insert the verb's object between the two words then it's most likely a phrasal verb, otherwise it most likely isn't. For example: "pick something up" - OK, therefore a phrasal verb. "spoon something feed" - NOT OK, therefore not a phrasal verb. Another way...
