Re: dashes---causing problems or solving them?
Forgive me, but what do you mean by a “dash.” All the examples here show two hyphens. These are not dashes. There are three types of dashes, namely Hyphens, Em Dashes and En Dashes The hyphen is the shortest of the three and is used most commonly to combine words (compounds such as...

Re: dashes---causing problems or solving them?
I like the dash. It lets one add emphasis and (dramatic) pauses. I think the summary in Webster's Third New International Dictionary is excellent: 7. THE DASH 7.0 In its function in writing and in the speech intonation to which it corresponds, the dash is similar to the comma and the colon,...

Re: Two thousand five
I looked at a couple of websites and they seem to put hyphens only in numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine. The first on your list is my choice: two thousand five. Dates are most often given in digits, however. The rest of the grammar looks fine.

Re: Up to date
Hello The OED I have suggests that 'up to date' be without hyphens when it is used as an adverb, but be 'up-to-date' with hyphens when used as an adjective. Also 'up-dately', 'up-to-datish', 'up-to-dateness' and 'up-to-datism'. Hope it heps paco

Re: Please comment
Hello Ed73 I think the problem may be that 'progress' by its nature can't be 'complete', so there's a faint incongruity in saying 'progress was 18% complete'. You progress towards completion of a given task or project. Would something like this suit your context? "As of November 21,...

Re: Hyphen usage
Turns out that if a compound adjective consists of more than one word an en rule should be used to indicate the link. So it's: candidate gene--based markers linkage disequilibrium--based marker-trait association detection Is anyone actually on this list?

Re: Hyphen usage
Here's a related question. My tricky phrases are as follows. "candidate gene based markers are being developed" In this instance "candidate" and "gene" have equal weighting and I would normally hyphenate them, but "based" makes it a bit more confusing. "X is helpful for linkage...

Re: Dash useage
Sorry to be so long, but I have been looking for a good comprehensive internet source on dashes; all the information seems to be in bits and pieces, and some of it is quite contradictory. Here is a good excerpt, however, from the Get it Write website: 'A number of you have written to ask us...

Rules for using hyphens
There have been a number of recent questions concerning when to use hypens. The following is an excerpt from The Economist magazine's style guide. © The Economist Newspaper Limited 2004 Use hyphens for: 1. FRACTIONS (whether nouns or adjectives): two-thirds, four-fifths, one-sixth,...
