AFAICS vocabulary seems to have a kind of hierarchy with say Level 1 being words like cat, dog, mummy, daddy, ... the meaning of' site. Words that might fit the bill would be say 'tendentious' and 'mendacity'. Any help greatly

Yeah, they are countable nouns
It depends on the situation, sometimes an abstract noun can be defined as countable if you mean different thing.
eg time
You can make it a countable noun if you refer to the particular time frame.
eg. I
