You should use ONE dictionary for this, and use whatever it says. If you have Oxford, then use check-up. If you have M-W, then use checkup. Make whichever dictionary you choose your sole reference for issues of hyphenation - unless, of course, your employer/teacher uses a different one and...

What you may be learning from this, Delly, is that hyphenation usually falls into a matter of "style" and not "grammar." And style can vary, depending on which style you follow. Also, check a comprehensive dictionary - often they will show hyphens and when you would use them and when you would not.
