Re: Another article problem
Oh, that's the key. Assuming it does mean a single cell (which even makes more sense), do you think the indefinite article is also possible? Sorry for this long questioning, we just did understand each other.Anton EDIT: Yes, it means a single cell.

Re: Is "There is the ..." an exceptional use?
Good advice for beginners using "existential there".You've got four combinations to disentangle here."existential there" means there exists -- such-and-such "has existence"."locative there" means in that location -- at that place. The two meanings are...

Countable: http://www.englishforums.com/English/WhyNoArticleHere/ggjmr/post.htm As for uncountable, you have already seen them: "Water boils at 100 centigrades (at the "standard" atmospheric pressure)" — here "water" refers to the verty substance, and the sentence...

Re: Is "There is the ..." an exceptional use?
My brief opinion: those are the kinds of books you should avoid reading. Unfortunately, there's a lot of 'em.

Is "There is the ..." an exceptional use?
I need your opinion on "there":A few grammar books carried by ESL students suggest that "there is" only takes indefinite articles such as "a/an", as in "There is an apple".Anything else, such as "the, my, our, his", is not supposed to come after...

Re: article
"Volcano" is presumably the name or title of that player, so it is indicating that this is a name and not an exploding mountain. You would not put an article before it unless there are more than one players with the name/title (as was indicated further onin the passage above),
