Re: I have eaten lunch/ direct translation
Michael Swan - Practical English Usage 419-3 Grammars usually say that the present perfect cannot be used together with expressions of finished time. ... In fact, such structures are unusual but not impossible (though learners should avoid them). ================== CGEL: Past time adjuncts in...

Re: Hairy chest!
Actually, The hair on the chest is just an adjunct as to whether the abs are flat/ and the body is clean. Hair has an attraction but the basic body says it all.

Re: I saw the tiger-
In B, I see more than one tiger. A & C are the same image (in spite of the comma, these two sentences are the same-- the comma is an artificial adjunct). I think you should wait for another opinion about 'images', though, Uamrich.

Re: She don't?
These are examples of either standard English for a dialect other than Standard English or they are examples of non-standard Standard English. English has many different registers. The way English is actually used in REAL life is not the manner described by most grammar books. Yesterday, I...

Re: Tenses
And a good day to you, Mr P. I see your point. But they are different situations. It's not logical to suggest that one grammar pattern can extend to all situations; there are obvious semantic considerations. Allow me to explain and then please point out where you feel I’ve erred. As I’ve often...

Re: Adjuncts in functional grammar (hallidayan approach)
There are three basic adjunct types (Halliday 1994): 1. experiential (circumstance/location) 2. textual (conjuncts; they bond clauses) 3. modal (writer's attitude) However (textual) unfortunately (modal) we can't meet at noon (experiential). Here are my guesses: 'Within seconds'...

Re: Adjuncts in functional grammar (hallidayan approach)
Sorry, Melissa, your question appears to be drifting off the board. I cannot locate Halliday's classification of adjuncts (I don't have the Bloor & Bloor text, and its contents do not appear to be available on the internet). But I can bump this back up and perhaps another member will know the...
