I have been out of school WAY to long and can not remember this rule of thumb. I thought it was when listing....use a colon, when phrasing use a semi colon????

That's OK, Abraxas-- I just deleted the first one. My comment-- the sentence seems to be structured OK, but is too awkward for me to be sure of that. Keep in mind that m-dashes can replace all sorts of punctuation-- commas, brackets, colons--
